Greenriggs Cottage Caravan Site and Shepherds Huts

Greenriggs Cottage Caravan Site was opened as a five van caravan site with the Camping and Caravanning Club in August 2019 by owners Tony and Jill.

We had visited the area often to walk along the South River Tyne and the old Haltwhistle to Alston railway line and had jumped at the chance of moving to Greenriggs in 2017 with the intention of opening a caravan site and then later adding the Shepherd Huts.

We sit amongst farmland at the foot of the Pennine Hills, overlooking an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the Northumberland / Cumbrian border.

We are between the market town of Brampton, the highest market town of Alston and Haltwhistle, the centre of Britain. We are close to the Northumberland 250.

For days away from site, you may want a drive across the Pennines to Penrith and the north lakes. Or head for Barnard Castle in Teasdale passing High Force, England’s biggest waterfall. Or Stanhope in Weardale exploring Killhope Lead Mining Museum on the way.

We are also a good base for visiting the popular market town of Hexham with the Abbey and riverside walks. The city of Carlisle with the Cathedral and Castle. Hadrian’s wall or Gretna Green on the Scottish border with the Outlet shopping village.

I cannot praise this site enough. The owners are so helpful and friendly. The location is just beautiful. Stunning views, plenty of walks from the site. Dark skies for stargazing. We spent a week here and I dont know when I last felt so relaxed and rested. This little piece of Northumberland is good for the soul. If we lived nearer, we would be there every weekend but from East Yorkshire, its a good 4 hours towing the van. We can't wait to go back again, hopefully for a week in the spring.

Firstly this site has two great owners...friendly and helpful. Great views and a neat and tidy site. Both easy and challenging walks, with fewer people than the nearby lake district. Close to Pennine way, Hadrians wall, south Tyne Trail. In non Covid times a small railway runs from nearby Alston. Well worth visit.

I loved every minute of staying here. Jill and tony the owners are lovely people and their site is perfect. Wide sweeping views all around and at night it is practically ‘dark sky’. It’s a great place to visit Hadrians Wall and Kielder Water and generally walk straight out of the camp. Village pub within walking distance too. I can’t recommend this place more highly. I shall be back.
